God’s blessings are beyond comprehension, what’s most important is that they come without painful toil for it! Proverbs 10:22
It was an unusual Sunday for me because mummy was absent on “omugwo” with Bobo. This left Nono and I alone in Church. On this faithful day, we had to wait behind after the service to make arrangements for bobo’s dedication.
Then came a young lady from one of the Church offices. Incidentally, our eyes met as she was making a weird facial expression. She kept staring at me as though I had kidnapped someone’s child.
She couldn’t hold it any longer and so she asked if Nono was my daughter, I confirmed with a “YES” & a nod immediately.
She told me that my daughter is so beautiful. She said these exact words: “Her mother must be very beautiful, she must have gotten her beauty from the mum”.
I felt bad! “But I am handsome ‘na'”. I argued in my mind. I kept thinking, “Maybe I should have just shaved my beards”. I blamed myself. The thoughts continued: “My skin wasn’t always this dark, it’s just this ‘hustling’ that has darken my skin. I may not be as beautiful and handsome as my kids, but I am not ugly either”. It was a serious debate on my mind.
My realization and conclusion about God’s blessings…
In the midst of all these, something struck me. “I don’t look like my blessings and MY BLESSINGS DO NOT RESEMBLE ME!”. God’s blessings are beyond my own comprehension and the understanding of men.
Wow! there’s the silver lining, I thought to myself. It’s God’s favour! I do not need to look “it”, neither do I need to act like “it”.
There and then I casted my mind back to all the blessings of God in my life’s journey that have kept people who think they know me surprised.
My first job as a Quantity Surveyor came just a month after my external project defense. At this time, my certificate wasn’t even ready neither did I have a CV! In fact, Some of my colleagues thought I was doing my Industrial Attachment for the second time.
That was me not looking like my blessings.
Furthermore, I remember going to a site in my village with an Architect friend of mine. A distant relative thought I was a manual labourer. Few months later, my father invited him to my wedding. He asked my dad how much I get paid that I can afford to get married. My dad smiled and gave him a full download of my CV.
I have had several instances where some people look at me and are surprised about the many wonders God has performed through this “village boy”.
We all have instances in our lives were we don’t measure-up in age, beauty, physique etc. with the blessings of God we currently enjoy.
Most times God encompasses us with His grace and favour which makes His blessings upon our lives to be way more than we could ever dream or imagine. God’s blessings are beyond comprehension indeed!
